I feel like in the 90s particularly a lot of well-meaning clueless people worked really hard to convince everyone that there are people who are Racists and they are easily identifiable and they are Bad People. Which leads to this:

someone says “that thing you did/said was racist”

you did something racist = you are racist

racist people = terrible, horrible people

I am not a terrible horrible person

therefore I am not racist

therefore you must be wrong and that thing I did/said was actually okay
