What is with the “Bollywood as a theme for parties” phenomenon? Most people aren’t that well acquainted with mainstream Indian cinema from post 80s, that is associated with the term Bollywood, to throw Bollywood themes. As in, Bollywood is not equivalent to anything and everything Indian; people muddle the two things and mask objectification and appropriation of Indian culture under the term Bollywood as a theme. The worst is when South Asian people are excited about their approval and recognition by White people and perpetuate stereotypes, like incorporating belly-dancing into Bollywood themed events. What?
Also, why isn’t the South Asian community critical of Bollywood’s repeated attempts at Westernization? Like why are people ok with White women replacing Indian background dancers and as occasional leads, who can’t even speak a word of Hindi? First we had darker skinned girls only as background dancers, never as leads, but not they can’t even have that, let’s just have White women. Also, I cannot stand the nepotism in that industry, mediocre acting has become the new standard as a result of the nepotism and casting models as actresses.
